Kew East — Complete uPVC Window & Door Retrofit
This 1970s brick-veneer home in Kew East had reached a critical point. After more than five decades of Melbourne weather, the original timber window and door frames had fully decayed. The wood was rotting from the inside out, seals had long since failed, and several windows could no longer open or close properly. Single-glazed panes offered virtually no insulation, making the home freezing in winter and stifling in summer. The homeowners made the decision to replace every window and door in the house — a complete retrofit that would transform the property’s comfort, energy efficiency, and street appeal in one project. Smart Doors & Windows was engaged to strip out every old timber frame and install a full suite of custom-manufactured uPVC double-glazed windows and doors throughout the home.
The Problem
50+ years of weather had destroyed the original timber frames. Wood was rotten, windows swollen shut, and single-glazed glass provided zero insulation.
Our Solution
Every window and door replaced with custom uPVC double-glazed units sized to fit existing openings. No structural modifications needed — airtight seals throughout.
Product Specification
White uPVC multi-chamber profiles with double-glazed Low-E argon-filled glass. Awning, fixed, and combination windows plus large sliding doors for the living areas.
The Result
Draughts eliminated, noise reduced, and thermal comfort transformed. White uPVC frames against red brick give the 1970s home a fresh, modern look with zero maintenance.
Installation in Progress
Our team worked methodically through the home, removing each decayed timber frame and preparing the brick reveals for the new uPVC units. Older homes often present challenges — non-square openings, deteriorated lintels, and hidden rot behind the frames — but our experienced installers handle these situations routinely. Each new window was packed, shimmed, and screwed into place with millimetre precision, then sealed with expanding foam and weatherproof sealant to ensure a completely airtight fit.

New uPVC Windows — Exterior Views
The completed exterior shows crisp white uPVC frames set neatly into the original red brickwork. Each window features a combination of fixed lower panes for maximum light and awning (top-hung) upper sashes for ventilation. The clean lines of the uPVC profiles modernise the home’s facade without altering its character, and the double-glazed units are virtually maintenance-free — no painting, no sealing, no rot for the life of the product.

New uPVC Windows & Doors — Interior Views
From inside, the difference is transformative. Generous double-glazed panes flood every room with natural light while blocking external noise and temperature extremes. The living areas feature large uPVC sliding doors that open wide to the backyard, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. Corner window configurations in the sunroom maximise the panoramic garden views. Every window operates smoothly on precision hardware, with multi-point locking for security on all opening sashes.
