Beacon Lighting Fyshwick — Interstate Commercial Glazing
The Beacon Lighting showroom in Fyshwick required approximately 35 metres of façade glazing to approximately 4 metres high, plus automatic sliding entrance doors — with drawings that contained incomplete information and several discrepancies. Manufacturing in Melbourne for a Canberra site added interstate logistics complexity to an already challenging project.
The Challenge
Approximately 35 metres of façade glazing to 4 metres high, plus automatic sliding entrance doors — with drawings containing incomplete information and several discrepancies that could not be fabricated from directly.
The Engineering Review
Rather than fabricating directly from the drawings, SDW’s engineering team assessed the proposed façade and found the original arrangement did not satisfy applicable wind-loading requirements under AS/NZS 1170.2. The team developed a revised solution incorporating additional posts at approximately 6-metre intervals.
Managing the Interstate Risk
With discrepancies already found in the documentation, SDW personnel travelled to Fyshwick to physically inspect and measure the site before manufacturing began — and built a subjamb system into the framing for flexibility during installation.
The Outcome
When the assembled frames arrived, one doorway had been altered after measurement, creating an unexpected 100 mm gap. Because the subjamb system had been built in proactively, the team accommodated the change without major disruption. Following the project’s success, Smart Doors and Windows became a preferred window supplier for Beacon Lighting nationally.
